Applications for Semester one 2019 close midnight October 31st 2018. We are also accepting early applications for semester two 2019.

There are two intakes per year; early February and mid July, with each group running for six months.

Applications are highly competitive. As we deliver this program for free, we only take 6-10 of the top candidates for each semester. Please read the requirements below carefully before applying.


With a strong emphasis on the practical application of cutting edge sports science and innovative strength and conditioning practices the Core Advantage internship offers a rare opportunity to get career ready in only 6 months.



Every year head coach and founder Durham McInnis along with senior coaches Jacob Tober, James Cheers, and Tennille Nash lead interns through more than 30,000 hours worth of practical knowledge distilled into a fast paced six month curriculum. Learning is highly interactive, with a mix of theoretical and practical components. In exchange for this valuable knowledge and intensive mentoring, interns will assist Core Advantage in training our athletes, including the Deakin Melbourne Boomers WNBL team as well as a host of elite athletes across a range of sports. 

We believe that offering the best internship possible is a vital part of our formula for success; all our coaches are graduates of this program.


The internship kicks off with a two day intensive induction phase, designed to accelerate your coaching capability, getting you gym-floor ready and providing a deep understanding of the Core Advantage principles and practices. For the following 6 months, we meet fortnightly on Monday afternoon for a practical three hour workshops covering all facets of strength and conditioning, athletic development and rehabilitation.

In addition to the workshops, interns are required to attend a minimum of one coaching shift (4 hours) per week. At these shifts you will assist the coaches with coaching athletes, setup, pack-up and a tiny amount of admin as required. You will learn a great deal on the gym floor that will further reinforce the workshops and be coached to maximise your skill-set every step of the way.



Application requirements 

Although students studying sports science and physiotherapy are preferred, we recognise that excellence can come from many backgrounds. Each applicant will be assessed on their merits.

You must be able to commit to the following:

  • A two day (Fri/Sat, 9am-5pm) intensive at the commencement of the semester (Feb/July)

  • Fortnightly Monday workshops (1-4pm)

  • A minimum of one 4-hour shift every week (Mon/Tue/Wed/Thurs 4-8pm, Sat 9am-1pm or 10am-2pm)

It should include:

  • A short cover letter introducing yourself

  • A sharp, honest resume including two or more referees who can be contacted

Please note applicants unable to fulfil the above criteria will NOT be granted an interview. Applications and enquiries via social media or the enquiry section of this website will NOT be considered.

Successful applicants will need to supply proof of the following before commencing the program:

  • Insurance cover. This can be Personal Trainer, Exercise Scientist or University based cover.
    - Applicants with a completed degree in exercise science (or equivalent) can register with Fitness Australia (Personal Trainers) and ESSA (Exercise Scientists). Once registered you can purchase insurance from Guild Insurance. 
    - Those still completing their degree can obtain insurance from Guild as a student member of ESSA.
    - University insurance (typically given when completing a practical unit of study) is also acceptable.
